Pump drives & controls

Pump drives,
controls and protection.

A tank-filling pump, a pressure-controlled installation and a remote pumping point do not need the same control sequence. Start with the motor and what you want the system to do.

Start with three questions

  1. 01

    Which motor?

Conventional AC or permanent magnet; nameplate and model details.

  2. 02

    Which electrical supply?

Input voltage, phase and frequency, separate from the drive output.

  3. 03

    Which operating function?

Protection, tank filling, pressure regulation or remote start/stop.

01 / PROTECTION

Control panels & motor protection

Single- or dual-pump operation, level or pressure inputs and remote functions depend on the configuration. A pressure switch or remote control does not automatically mean variable-frequency operation.

02 / MOTOR MATCHING

Permanent-magnet drives

Match the drive to the pump motor and operating range. Include both the motor details and the local input power supply when requesting a configuration.

03 / VARIABLE SPEED

Pressure & frequency control

Define the pressure setpoint, sensor signal, number of pumps and motor type. Specific input, output and power ratings must be confirmed for the proposed drive.

Explore constant-pressure control

Function before model number

Choose the pump
control function.

Describe the sequence in ordinary language. The electrical specification can then be worked through.

Fill a tank and stop when it is full

Provide the pump details and the intended level-sensing arrangement. Also describe what should happen if the water source runs low.

Discuss: level inputs, protection and restart behaviour.

Maintain pressure as demand changes

State the target pressure, the demand range and the number of pumps. Confirm whether variable speed is required and which motor the drive must support.

Discuss: VFD compatibility, sensor signal and duty range.

Operate the pump remotely

Explain the start/stop command, operating distance and local conditions. Remote switching and speed regulation are different functions.

Discuss: control method, signal conditions and local requirements.

Solar requirement?

Planning to run
the pump on solar?

Share the pump and motor details, daily water demand, site location and planned solar array. Solar input compatibility and a validated pump-drive combination must be established for the specific system.

Not sure which detail matters?

A short description, an existing model or a photo gives us a starting point. Our team can help with the next questions.

A motor nameplate and a short description of the operating sequence make a useful starting point.
